La bonne nouvelle : le TOEIC n'est pas un test de vocabulaire infini. Les mêmes mots reviennent constamment d'un test à l'autre. Une analyse des sujets des 10 dernières années montre qu'environ 200 termes couvrent plus de 80% du vocabulaire testé. Maîtrisez-les, et vous éliminez la plupart des pièges.

Le TOEIC teste un anglais professionnel courant, pas un anglais littéraire ou académique. Les questions tournent autour de situations de bureau, de voyages d'affaires, de réunions, d'annonces et de correspondance professionnelle.

Les 200 mots de cette liste ont été sélectionnés selon 3 critères :

  1. Fréquence d'apparition dans les examens TOEIC officiels
  2. Difficulté pour les francophones (faux amis, mots à double sens)
  3. Impact sur le score (un mot compris = 1 question sauvée)

"To attend" ne signifie PAS "attendre" ! C'est un faux ami classique. "To attend" = assister à, participer. "Attendre" se dit "to wait". Au TOEIC, "All staff must attend the workshop" = tout le personnel doit assister à l'atelier.

Piège TOEIC classique

"Outstanding" a deux sens au TOEIC. Sens 1 (le plus fréquent dans les questions finance) : en attente, impayé — "outstanding balance" = solde impayé. Sens 2 : exceptionnel, remarquable — "outstanding performance" = performance exceptionnelle. Le contexte vous dira lequel utiliser.

Astuce TOEIC

"Complimentary" revient très souvent au TOEIC. Ça ne veut PAS dire "complimentaire" au sens de "qui complète". Ça signifie gratuit, offert. "Complimentary Wi-Fi" = Wi-Fi gratuit. "Complimentary parking" = parking offert. C'est l'un des faux amis les plus testés.

Piège TOEIC classique

"Premises" est toujours au pluriel en anglais. On dit "the premises" (les locaux), jamais "a premise". Attention : "premise" (au singulier) existe, mais signifie "prémisse" (une hypothèse) — un sens complètement différent. Au TOEIC, c'est toujours "premises" = locaux.

La méthode pour mémoriser ces 200 mots avant le TOEIC

Avoir cette liste, c'est bien. La retenir, c'est mieux. Voici un plan de révision réaliste sur 4 semaines :

Semaine 1-2 : Apprenez 15 mots par jour avec la répétition espacée. En 14 jours, vous aurez vu les 200 mots au moins une fois.

Semaine 3 : Révisez les mots marqués "difficiles" par votre système de flashcards. Concentrez-vous sur les faux amis et les mots à double sens.

Semaine 4 : Faites des tests blancs TOEIC et repérez les mots de cette liste dans les questions. Vous serez surpris de voir combien vous en reconnaissez.

Les 200 mots de cette liste ne vous feront pas passer de 600 à 900. Mais ils peuvent facilement vous faire gagner 50 à 100 points en éliminant les erreurs de compréhension sur le vocabulaire de base. C'est le meilleur rapport effort/résultat pour une préparation TOEIC.
